Is it hoops season yet?

A lot of Cal Poly fans are asking that question this week after the Mustangs football team dropped out of the national rankings for the first time since early in the 2004 season.
The good news is Cal Poly still has an outside shot at the postseason and is two wins away from ensuring its sixth winning season in seven years under head coach Rich Ellerson.
Other good news for Cal Poly folks, the men's soccer program has cracked the rankings for the first time since 1995, according to the school. You can read about the ups and downs of those two teams here.
But now that the fall sports are into the second half of their seasons, it probably isn't a bad time to start talking basketball.
After all, practices have started and the Mustangs open the season next month. Hungry for a Big West Conference preview already? Here's a brief team-by-team breakdown of the Big West at SI.com.

P.S. This is a noteworthy update in that it is post No. 100 for me, which is kind of a surprise considering I was initially against taking time away from writing for the print edition to publish a blog -- which is still a four-letter word in my eyes. Now the question is, has anybody been reading this thing? Does anyone even care about blogs, particularly one on Cal Poly sports?Likes? Dislikes? Do you think blogs are lame and the print edition is better and where The Tribune should be focusing its attention/resources? Share your thoughts by commenting below.

Brian...

Blogs do nothing more than give the fans the opportunity to voice (or print) their opinions regarding Cal Poly sports. The bigger the sport, the more the interest. This blog "thing" is going to continue to grow. I noticed that so far you have nine comments on the blog that you posted regarding the South Dakota State performance versus the Cal Poly defense. I read your blogs and I think that so far that blog is your biggest success. I would also suggest that taking a controversial position will also lead to more reader response. Unfortunately this is probably something that you have to be careful about since you do have to get along with the coaches and administration.

Keep it up !!!

Is it basketball season?

No it's SOCCER season, and hopefully notice is served to Coach Bromley that new coaches (Stevenson, Holocher & even Ellerson/Lee) are turning CP athletics around. If Cone was smart she would realize what great things have come from the recent coaching changes & that CP athletics has all the potential in the world if you put the right coach in there. Save your basketball reporting for when we have a new coach.

Also, Brian, why no blogging on CP soccer? CP beats the defending national champ (equivalent to our football team beating Florida) in front of the 3rd largest NCAA soccer crowd on a national level and not a boo from you. As a football season ticket holder who was at the game, I can honestly say the crowd was better than any CP football game I have been to.

You don't like soccer? Well, you better start, because Holocher has put CP on the map. I may even trade in those football tix for soccer season tix....

You may want to hang on to those football tickets. They will be worth big money (OK, maybe not big money but at least more than what you paid) when North Dakota State comes to town.

I can't believe that I actually read a blog about soccer...

I do read the blog and I like it. The reason is, I often forget to read the sports section so miss the stories. However since I subscribe to the RSS feed of your blog, I get all of your posts delivered to me with no searching on my part.

I read it mostly for Mustang Football but somtimes find the other sport posts interesting. However since it is a blog subscribed through RSS, it is really simple to pass on the stuff that doesn't interest me.

I hope you keep running it.

Brian, You are in the infancy of something much better than the regular print media! It needs time to grow on people! I for one enjoy your blog and hope you keep with it. I certainly realize that you have been getting limited comments but many of us are not as good with words and are therefore somewhat reluctant to post.

Hang in there and keep it coming!

Thanks! Go Poly!

Brian:

LOVE your blog about Cal Poly sports. The only thing I don't like about it is you don't blog often enough! As the Poly athletic department continues to grow and mature into a bona fide Division I entity, so too does fan interest. Your blog gives the fan base extra tidbits about the teams we don't normally get to read about in any other media outlet. So keep up the good work and keep those blogs coming!

The football game on 11/10 was going go be exciting - with playoff implications - but now, sadly, it will just be to see if CP can salvage a winning season.

A loss in Idaho and playoff hopes are over, even with a win on 11/10. Hopefully CP runs the table going into 11/10 and hopefully ND State is still ranked number one, and hopefully CP wins, but, having lived here and rooted for CP sports for 30 years, I think that kinda luck is not on my side.

Keep 'em coming, Brian. I enjoy reading your articles, I mean blogs. ;-)

I also love the blog. I used to go to Poly but now I'm out of town and its way easier to read your blog than to root around on the TT website. (To me it's still the "TT".)

I think your insight into the inner workings of the athletic department is good and I agree with the poster above that growing fan interest is a sign of a growing university athletics program.
